BATTS news

16 Feb 2011

We're in a busy part of the season so here are a few items that are coming up:
Essex Schools Individual Championships are at BATTS on Sunday 27th Feb. Forms and more details HERE and note that entries close this Friday. Winners go through to national finals. So still time to enter and open to anyone up to the age of 19 in full time education in Essex.
This weekend we have British League Div 2 at BATTS. Spectators welcome and we can pay for umpiring if you would like to assist.
Next week is half term and we have 22 newcomers taking part in a come and try session from 1.30-3.30 on Wednesday (23rd Feb). Any junior or adult help with feeding balls would be much appreciated.
We would like to have a page on our website with photographs of players when they were  younger! Please email your photo direct to Graham or give them to him for scanning if you prefer.
The BATTS pyramid starts on Friday 4th March at 7.30pm. This is a form of the popular ladder league and should be good fun. No need to enter in advance. There is no extra charge. Club practice as usual if you prefer.

The first ever BATTS drawn doubles tournament was held on 4th February, replacing our normal club night. Doubles pairs were chosen to provide closely matching standard and we certainly had some very tight matches all through the evening. Most of the preliminary matches went to five games and so it was no surprise when the final also went the full distance, with Mark Fielding and James Thorpe emerging the winners against Sima Aminmozaffari and Ross Brierley 11-9, 9-11, 10-11, 11-4, 11-6.

A spectacular “Elite” hard bat tournament will be held at BATTS on Saturday 30th April 2011. We expect to see some of the top hard bat players from Europe at this event, so make a note of the date now. Organiser Fred Dove says this is going to be “The Big One”.
The competition will be limited to 48 players, and the format will be best of three games playing up to 21.
If you would like to enter the tournament you can download the entry form HERE. Otherwise, be sure to look in on 30th April and see some of the masters of the hard bat game in action. Play starts at 10am.
For more information about this event see the attached leaflet HERE.

Our normal schedule of table tennis is as follows.  This may be varied from time to time so if you are planning to visit the club it may be best to contact us first.
At most times, we have up to 12 tables available (although sometimes the club will have some junior coaching sessions running, and on some evenings there will also be league matches on some tables)

Don't miss it! A special event that will be open to all BATTS members and visitors. You will be paired with another person and enter a doubles tournament that will run during the evening. Free entry (visitors must pay the normal fee) and you will be guaranteed at least four matches during the competition.

Come and see some of  the top juniors in Essex competing for the prestigious junior titles at BATTS.  This is always an enjoyable event with hot food available from the cafeteria throughout.
* U18 and U16 events are  on Saturday 8th January
* U15 and U13 events are on Sunday 9th January
* If you would like to enter you can download an entry form HERE . Closing date for entries is Tuesday 21st December.

There was a superb feast of top notch table tennis at BATTS on the weekend of 27th -28th November, when the British League held a full programme of premier division matches. Fortunes were mixed for the BATTS top team.  Although the team lost all four matches over the weekend, some of the strongest players were unavailable. This leaves our team in a tussle for survival with three other teams at the foot of the division. Watch out for more opportunities to support the BATTS team when the next round of matches is played.
