BATTS hosted the first "Elite" Hard Bat Tournament of 2011 on Saturday 30 April. The addition of a top class complement of players from Holland helped to make it another day to remember. The rules were simple - BATTS provided the standard Rubber bats and at the end of each end these had to be left on the table so that the next end would be played with the bat from that end. Scoring was 21-Up.
An interesting observer was legendary Sporting impresario Barry Hearn, taking a look at the UK version of Hard Bat Table Tennis after recently running a massive event in America.

Barry Hearn takes up the hard bat challenge at BATTS
Going forward Barry is going to be talking with Sky TV very shortly and he is confident that they can be persuaded to televise a major Hard Bat event in the near future. This could be a landmark moment in the upsurge of Hard Bat table tennis in this country. All Table Tennis players should watch developments with interest.
All eyes were on Netherland’s Marti Hendriksen, the 2010 WUTTO (Standard Bat) World Champion who had ousted the incomparable Jan-Ove Waldner en route to the Final.

Another great Super League took place at BATTS on 15th April.
Darius Knight picked up his third Superleague title of the season, winning the final decisively 5,4,4 against the popular Indian player Omkar Torgalkar in the final. Mind you he had to work hard to get there with Peter Radford pinching the first leg in round 2, Craig Bryant losing out in 4 close games a round later, and the irrepressible Gareth Herbert 2 -1 up in games in the semi final before losing 8 in the fifth. Omkar to reach the final beat Lewis Gray in 4 tight games and then had a wonderful semi final win over Gavin Rumgay 9,5, 11. Gareth completed a great night by beating Gavin 9,4,12 in the third place play off.
Maciej Nakielski who lives close by in Waltham Abbey had a night he'll never forget . He beat Costas Papantoniou in the first round and was finally stopped by Rumgay in the quarters but still managed to beat Lewis Gray to gain a remarkable seventh place finish in this international field. Evangeline Collier had a superb three straight win over seeded Mindaugas Sinkus in round 1 which meant that she played top 16 players for the rest of the evening. Soon afterwards her great form was confirmed with a call up for the England junior team. Other stand out results included Jake Collins taking Gareth Herbert to five in round 2.

We are delighted to present a wonderful opportunity for some intensive coaching over the summer at BATTS.
Gareth Herbert, double gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games, and his colleagues from Inspiration Sports will be running two Summer Camps at BATTS. Each is two days, and you can book for either one or both days.
All ages and standards are welcome.  Book in soon and be inspired!

We're in a busy part of the season so here are a few items that are coming up:
Essex Schools Individual Championships are at BATTS on Sunday 27th Feb. Forms and more details HERE and note that entries close this Friday. Winners go through to national finals. So still time to enter and open to anyone up to the age of 19 in full time education in Essex.
This weekend we have British League Div 2 at BATTS. Spectators welcome and we can pay for umpiring if you would like to assist.
Next week is half term and we have 22 newcomers taking part in a come and try session from 1.30-3.30 on Wednesday (23rd Feb). Any junior or adult help with feeding balls would be much appreciated.
We would like to have a page on our website with photographs of players when they were  younger! Please email your photo direct to Graham or give them to him for scanning if you prefer.
The BATTS pyramid starts on Friday 4th March at 7.30pm. This is a form of the popular ladder league and should be good fun. No need to enter in advance. There is no extra charge. Club practice as usual if you prefer.

The first ever BATTS drawn doubles tournament was held on 4th February, replacing our normal club night. Doubles pairs were chosen to provide closely matching standard and we certainly had some very tight matches all through the evening. Most of the preliminary matches went to five games and so it was no surprise when the final also went the full distance, with Mark Fielding and James Thorpe emerging the winners against Sima Aminmozaffari and Ross Brierley 11-9, 9-11, 10-11, 11-4, 11-6.
