There was a huge entry in the BATTS 1* junior tournament held on 31st March/1st April, with 143 competitors arriving from all round the region. This reflects the great enthusiasm developing for table tennis at junior level in our area. Our own juniors achieved some excellent successes against the stiff opposition.  Congratulations to the following:

  • James Denyer - winner of the U16 Boys singles
  • Luke Jones - runner up in the U16 Boys consolation
  • Kleber Silva - winner of the U15 Boys singles
  • Jess Jarvis - runner up in the U16 Girls consolation
  • Emma Knudsen - runner up in the U13 Girls consolation

Ron Wilde

09 Feb 2012

Neil writes......
Sylvia Wilde contacted me this afternoon with the awful news that Ron collapsed and died suddenly yesterday. Ron was a BATTS member for about 15 years until injury stopped him playing around 2 years ago.
We always look for nice words at a time like this but with Ron they're not hard to find. He was universally popular, always charming, and softly spoken with a ready smile . Apart from being a fine player ( he was still beating me well into his 70s ), he was always ready to coach the juniors and he was a frequent helper on our annual pilgrimage to the disability day at Luton.
Our fondness for Ron was clearly mutual and I leave you with Sylvia's words today : " Please let the good friends he made at BATTS know he so enjoyed the hours he spent with you ".
Ron's funeral is at Parndon Wood at 1pm on Wednesday 22nd February. If you intend to come, please contact Neil and he will give you more details when available.

A triumphant return for Evie Collier after enforced time out from table tennis with a broken foot. Last weekend she starred in the WBL Premier League helping her team DHS Greenhouse Progress to win the league.  Evie won 6 our of her 10 matches  putting her in the top five in the averages, and her wins included the England no. 16 Karen Shepherd.  Well done Evie!

Some excellent results for BATTS players in the recent British League matches played at BATTS and Cippenham. Read Steve Kerns' report for full details, including the spectacular win by Luke Walsh against highly ranked Gary Dodd of Guernsey.

On Monday 2nd January the 1 star Essex Junior Tournament was held at BATTS, and there were some outstanding performances from our own players.
Congratulations to Jess Jarvis for winning the Under 13 and the Under 15 events, overcoming Shannon Conway in a very close final of the U15.  Shannon is ranked 11 places above Jess in the England junior rankings, so this is an excellent result for Jess.
There were other notable successes for BATTS players. Alex Holland won the U18 boys, beating Charlie Bates in the final.  Kleber Silva won the U18 boys restricted event.
Also congratulations to Sam Lowman, Luke Jones, James Knudsen and Emma Knudsen who all performed creditably and notched up several wins.
