As we start the new year table tennis at BATTS is really buzzing. Take a look at some of the recent and upcoming events:
Last weekend several of our leading players were involved in the World Championship of Ping Pong promoted by Matchroom Sports and televised live on Sky TV. This was the result of a phenomenal effort by our own Fred Dove. Not only was it a huge success, but it also generated media and public interest which has been so absent from table tennis in recent years. Viewing figures were apparently much greater than Barry Hearn had expected.
Many of us were privileged to be present at the iconic Alexandra Palace to feel the excitement first hand and cheer on our own players. Surprise entry at the finals was Tony West, who was transformed in the blink of an eye from just another supporter to TV star! Tony was asked to play at very short notice (3 minutes!) when one of the other finalists failed to appear. Tony did brilliantly, reaching the last 16 with some superb wins against the tough overseas opposition. Jimmy Walsh was disappointed not to reach that stage, losing in a close encounter with Egle Adomelyte, the only woman to have made it to the finals.
As well as being our own most successful entrant, Tony West made a highly competent debut as a member of the commentary team. Read more about Tony’s fantastic achievements HERE
This weekend we are, at the time of writing, very busy with competitions. We have just seen another superb “grass roots” tournament organised by Aad. He managed to attract a massive entry of 54 youngsters including 15 of our own – many getting their first taste of competitive play. Well done Aad for organising this and also to Arthur Clark for being the tournament referee, Lynn Mansfield who stepped in to help keep the competition running smoothly, and Sharon for her hard work on refreshments. Here is a selection of photos from the event…………..

On Sunday (13th January) we have some critical matches for our team in the British League. Two of our leading juniors Jared Patel and Luke Walsh are involved in a battle for survival in Division One, so if you see this in time please consider coming to support them and you will also see some fantastic table tennis. Play starts on Sunday at 10.30am. Our other team, spearheaded by Sean Gibson, is also in action on Sunday.
Looking a bit further ahead we have more opportunities to see some top class table tennis at BATTS. On Sunday 20th January we are hosting a day of British League Premier Division matches with some of the leading players in the country competing. Play starts at 11am.
The following weekend, on Saturday 26th January, sees the continuation of our campaign in the National Junior League, with matches held at Ellenborough. Three teams of juniors are competing in this against some tough competition from experienced opponents. Then, the next weekend, on Sunday 3rd February, it is the turn of the cadets playing in the National Cadet League. Again we have three teams competing, and most of the opposing teams have far more experience and are much older – well done to our young hopefuls for keeping their spirits up. It will pay dividends for them in the future!
On 9th and 10th February our leading juniors are competing in the Junior British League at Wolverhampton. Our girls team of Ella Patel, Annabel Gibson and Emily Godfrey are currently placed third in Division One and our boys team – Jared Patel, Luke Walsh, Isaac Beevor and Alex Holland are currently top of Division One and were nominated as team of the weekend in the last round of matches.
You can find more information about the Junior British League HERE.
We also have representation at the very top level in junior competitions, with Jared and Ella Patel qualifying to participate in the Junior Masters Competition on 19th and 20th January. In this they will be up against the elite of English junior players. For more information see the ETTA website HERE.
Another notable achievement for one of our keen juniors is that Ryan Hubbard has been selected for the BTTAD performance development squad. Well deserved recognition for all Ryan’s hard work.
Coming up in February is the Essex 4-star Cadet/Junior tournament. All of our Top Squad members are encouraged to enter this prestige tournament. Contact Aad for more information and you can download the entry form HERE. Closing date is 23rd January.
Lynne Mansfield is doing a great job in selling our new supply of shirts. Contact Lynne if you have not yet got yours. For more information see our SHIRTS page
If you want to keep up with the wider world of table tennis – there is plenty of controversy right now – you should look in on the Table Tennis Talk Forum. As well as an active discussion forum on table tennis there is a mine of information with interesting videos,  and a dollop of fun stuff and nostalgia.
It is really encouraging to see some of our more experienced players taking an interest in coaching. We are always keen to recruit more coaches and others who can help us with our budding superstars. Speak to Aad or Graham for more information.
