BATTS junior 1 star tournament

29 Oct 2012

The BATTS 1 star junior tournament, held on 27th and 28th October, attracted young players from all over the eastern region and beyond, with 93 entries in the boys’ events and 23 in the girls’.
There were some notable performances by our own juniors during the weekend giving us great encouragement for the future.
The U18 boys event was won by Jack Anthony (Suffolk) defeating Charlie Bates (Essex) in the final. Our players James Knudsen and Luke Jones, playing well above their age group, both reached the quarter final by finishing runner up in their respective groups.
There was further success for James in the U16 event, where he won his group to reach the semi final, losing only to Samuel Horscroft the eventual winner.
A special mention here for our own players Josh Poland, who reached the final and Luke Jones who reached the semi final in the consolation event of the U16 boys.

The star of the U15 and U13 boys’ singles was James Smith (Kent), who won both events with consummate ease, dropping only 3 games in the process. Definitely a champion in the making there.
The girls’ events were all played by round robin, and our own Jess Jarvis completely dominated the U18 and U16 events played on Saturday, winning both competitions. This was a fantastic performance by Jess. Still only 13, she defeated three players ranked above her in the England junior/cadet rankings. Ema Gadzhova, who came second in the U18 and third in the U16 events, is ranked 35 places higher than Jess in the cadets.

Finally, congratulations to Arthur Clarke, referee and Neil Brierley and his helpers for organising and running another successful tournament. Click HERE to read the referee's full report on the event.
